CGRU postpones matrix season until the spring
August 05, 2020
It is with heavy hearts that the CGRU board has voted to postpone the 15s matrix season until the spring of 2021. We pushed off the decision as long as possible, but with no current clear endpoint of covid-19 that would allow training to resume at full speed and with a new registration system being finalized by USAR we no longer see a path forward to safely have matrix play this fall. The board believes this decision is in the best interest of the members, families, and supporters of the CGRU and we continue to look for ways to build and strengthen membership. The union will work on getting spring only schedules out to division that do not have one already as soon as possible.
Frequently Asked Questions:
When should I CIPP if we do not have matrix matches?
USAR just announced that registration will open August 15th for senior club. You must be CIPP to practice and play friendlies in order to be complaint. We do plan on allowing friendlies as soon as we can and possibly arranging other rugby events this fall.
What will be the cost to CIPP?
We don’t expect an overall change, because the costs that USAR is no longer taking on will fall on the shoulders of the union budget. Until we know what those cost will be, we can only guess what we need to cover operations cost.
Does the mean no rugby this fall?
We can not say that there will not be rugby this fall; we hope that teams will have a chance to get in friendlies and have other rugby related activities. There is a possibility of other variants of the game, such as flag or touch, that may be available before full contact 15s. This will be a great opportunity to connect with sponsor and develop talent.
Can we practice?
You can practice up to the level of guidelines provided by USAR based on your state’s regulations. Due to the uncertainty of everything going on we urge you to take a cautious approach. We support teams that cover 3 states, and each club should know the guidelines and respect them.
Is my current CIPP valid through August of 2020?
It is unclear at what level the CIPP is currently valid. Typically, it would run through August, and you can start signing up for the new CIPP starting August 15th this year. We don’t know for certain, but it appears that up to the level of “openness” your home state is on the USAR scale that that amount of coverage would be valid. If you travel to a more “open” state, we do not claim to know what level would be available. September 1st you will need to be registered in order to be in compliance for practice for the upcoming season.
