CGRU Launches Referee Education Program
October 23, 2018
CAROLINAS, USA - The Carolinas Geographic Rugby Union (CGRU) is excited to announce the launch of a referee education program aimed at increasing the number of certified referees throughout the Carolinas. As rugby participation continues to grow throughout the region the demand for qualified referees is also increasing. In order to get ahead of this curve, the CGRU has committed to reimbursing the cost of the USA Rugby Level 1 Officiating Rugby Course for current registered members of CGRU clubs. The purpose of this introductory course is to enable officials to acquire basic skills to officiate safe, enjoyable competition.
“We need to get more people involved as referees at all levels throughout the Carolinas,” added CGRU Executive Director of Referees Amanda Cox. “This program is an excellent way to get started into officiating. At the same time, it also gives players more knowledge of the laws of rugby and a better understanding of what it is like behind the whistle. So, we feel that this also works as a player development tool.”
How does it work?
The individual enrolls and pays for the course through USA Rugby
Attend and complete the course successfully
Officiate five matches
Track matches refereed on a spreadsheet. Have a representative from the home team sign as a witness
Apply for reimbursement to the CGRU Referee Director
Attach course receipt
Attach copy/photo of spreadsheet with five matches and signatures
Matches refereed can be friendlies, scrimmages, and/or youth rugby. They do not need to be CGRU sanctioned conference matches. There is also no requirement to join the local referee society.
“We’re excited to be able to offer this program to our members and add it to our list of development opportunities,” added CGRU President Ted Hardy. “Our goal is to continue to grow and spread rugby throughout our union. We can’t do that without qualified referees to match the growth in playing participation.”
The CGRU Referee Development Program is effective immediately. To learn more about the program, please contact the CGRU at email@example.com or visit the USA Rugby website and search for a Level 1 Officiating Rugby course near you.
